Woobies Wanted
[profile] brown_betty and I have been discussing woobies. Further research - for the good of science! - is now required, and so I come to you for help. I need a list of woobies.

TVTropes has a great page on woobies [Warning: [profile] cherry_ice and I have determined that TVTropes is a black hole. If you click on this link, there is a chance you will never escape from the website. Leave a message for your loved ones before you click. Also it's a good idea to pack a lunch.], which features this definition:

"[The woobie] is that character you want to give a big hug, wrap in a blanket and feed soup to when he or she suffers so very beautifully."

And there is, of course, a huge long list of woobies attached, but a lot of those people are woobies in canon more than in fan fiction, and I want the fannish ones. I'm looking for the person in a given fandom who is always being hurt (and then comforted), the person who you just know is going to have a secret shame or a secret trauma or a secret disease, probably while he is being raped and beaten in prison by Nazis with spiky boots. In other words, I want to know who, in your fandom, is the character who you'd immediately think of if you read this header:

Title: Recovery and Revelations Part 7, 1/???
Series: Hold Me Tight Tonight (Confronting the Darkness)
Author: I <3 Woobies!
Summary: To protect the ones he or she loves, Character X sold his or her body to evil slaver alien wizards. Now Character X is finally back home. Can the [team/family/friends/loved ones/etc.] help him or her recover?
Warnings: Noncon, dubcon, torture, past child abuse and incest, betrayal, cutting, slavery, underage sex, involuntary drug use, porn, some swears.

In the future, there will be a poll. But first, I need the names to go in the poll. So tell me: in your fandom, who is the woobie? To make this extra-challenging, especially for you people in Harry Potter and Supernatural: you can only nominate one person per fandom. I want to hear about the Woobiest in All the Land.

Colin from Everwood

Crichton from Farscape

Chuck from Chuck

And considering the bad ending for two out of three (or four), I'm a little concerned about Chuck's future prospects.

Neville Longbottom, from HP

I know there are others, but I can't think of them right now. I'm overloaded on color and texture and stuff from the knitting expo I spent today immured in.

Knitting expo yay! Um, except that I would buy SO MUCH YARN that I would never use.

And HP is, like, the fandom of woobies. Sooooo many characters qualify; it gets a special gold medal.

SG-1: Daniel Jackson
SGA: Sheppard (he breaks so nicely)
NCIS: Dinozzo
Bandom: I don't know! Pick one, you say, but there's so many bands! Pete, I suppose. Or Gerard.
Buffy: Xander
Criminal Minds: Spencer
Leverage: Hardison. Or Parker.

*eyes list* And those are just the fandoms that I've read in the past week... (And that aren't so obscure that there isn't an lj community for them.)
<3.14apple_pi on February 28th, 2010 04:10 am (UTC)
See, I thought Rodney McKay for SGA, but your John Sheppard made me stop and think. But then! I was poking around TVTropes, and found the Tragic Hero. I think maybe John is a Tragic Hero, because so many of his problems come from his own inner workings (ie total inability to understand/express emotion). Although he does get beat up and look pretty a lot, so... hmmm. I cannot decide. I do think Rodney has better woobie eyes, though. *g*

I would totally read that story. Okay, no I wouldn't, because I don't read child sex abuse or cutting (for, uh, different reasons). But other than that I'm in. Reunions AND evil slaver alien wizards? Awesome!

Uh, and as already pointed out Daniel Jackson is That Character in SG-1, but you knew that already. Blair in Sentinel. In Buffy it's either Xander or Spike; I vote for Xander, but then I have Spike issues.

DC Comics: Tim Drake. Like, duh. In fact IMO you can stop looking now because Tim Drake really is the woobiest of all.

Merlin: imma think outside the box and say Gwen. Her mother was already dead, her father was killed for no reason, and both her boyfriends have independently decided to ditch her because their love cannot be!!eleventydrama!! Admittedly she isn't the secret shame type but really now.

Young Wizards: ... sadly, the Lone Power. Sure, he's the guy who originally invented death and entropy, but he's also eldest, fairest, and fallen.

Well, for most of the members of the IJ comm Snapedom, it would be Snape with no competition. :-P

For me, (since, you know, I read the books) it's Neville Longbottom. (Although he sure held his own in book 7, and Harry would totally fit the summary you posted! :-P)
